Nola

1. I bet you think I’m sitting at the bar
Sipping on a bottle of sorrow
I bet you thought I’d cry it all out
Naked between my fine silk sheets

2. I bet you didn’t think I’d be sitting here
Knocking back tall glasses of Disaronno
Wondering when I’m gonna catch my next flight
To New Orleans, where my heart calls to be

3. I bet you didn’t think I’d be celbrating
Miles high, across the sky with the pilot
Dancing down Canal with strangers
Having gumbo just down the street

4. My glass used to be filled
At the sound of your coive
Now Jazz tops off my rim
As Frenchmen dance along my brick roads

5. You used to be my everything
The sun shining through the clouds
But the years rolled on by
Like this bud in my hand

6. Something happened
That much is clear
I should of seen the signs
But the flags were lost in your eyes

7. It’s Time to stop. Take a deep breath
Color outside the lines, No resistance
We went down with the ship
There’s no point looking down

8. We fought a battle nobody could win
Chose the course that was thin
Like the ice covering my heart
You placed the veil way too tight

9. The embers were way too hot
Flames engulfed our sins
We had to break to see the faults
I had to leave to see Fate’s Lies

10. I bet you thought I’d be
Lost in the organic comings and goings
The day to day jumping thru hoops
But the shit show goes on

11. I bet you thought the circus ended
But the clowns haven’t left
It’s just you in the ring now
Lines drawn, no border crossing

12. I bet you thought I’d see reason
At the bottom of this bottle
But my glass keeps on filling
Dripping from anothers’ Nectar

13. I bet you thought I’d be lonely
But I wrote this on a Friday
Mid morning, Flight after flight
On the way into my lovers arms

14. Forgetting you with every mile
I bet you thought
I’d be your do or die
But you were never mine

15. You tried to play Master
But the Gods lifted me up
They prayed for me
When you wouldn’t answer

16. I heard their sirens
Raised voices calling
Prophets singing
Your dismissal
Colossal enterprises

17. I’m usually honest, modest
But you took it out of me
Now I’m colder than the snow
You wrap yourself in

18. These streets no longer hold your tongue
Your whispers fell on slow winds
Nothing to hold your name
Sin after sin your ink released mine

19. I bet you thought I’d be lost
Along the river banks
Painting away my memories
But I kept them close

20. Mindful, I found prose
In the silence of distance
2 thousand reasons to go
But not a single one to stay.

21. I bet you thought I’d crawl back
When the mirrors shattered my face
Like the fist you raised
Against my flesh in rage

22. I bet you wanted me tonight
When you were holding her close
But the Gods are ever watchful
You were always in their sight

23. As my pigments run across my page
I see the moments of yesterday
When New Orleans called to me
And it beckoned me to play
